[STYLE=width: 325px; background-color: #ffffff; padding: 5px; text-align: left; font-family: arial; font-size: 10px;] nickname Nier age Who keeps count after the first few millennium? gender Male sexuality Ambiguous... position Deity (god of the underworld) powers Soul Binding/Contract; Nier has the ability to summon up to three dead servants to obey his commands. How it works: Nier acts as the ruler of souls that have ceased to exist within the mortal realm, his duty not being one of inflicting death upon mortals but ensuring eternal peace in the afterlife, as well as the correct level of suffering being placed upon souls that are deemed deserving of such. Subsequently when a soul departs from its mortal platform and takes place at his front door he is known to brandish a contract to those he finds amusing or useful in some manner or another. These contracted souls are given a 'commission' by the god of death, rewards particular to each individual, but at the price of their soul being bound to Nier, summon-able at a time of need in whatever capacity he needs them.
The manner in which soul binding works is complex, Nier carries with him at all times some form of proof that a contract has been made, and by giving power to the proof may manipulate the souls he has under his control. Then he must find a container in which to place the soul, be it a cadaver, item or anything that may be charged with a life-force or phantasmal energy. If a cadaver is the chosen container it does not specifically have to be the original body that the soul came from, though it is ideal if that is possible as a 'rejection' may occur in other cases, resulting in the soul dissipating and the contract being void. Souls that dissipate do not find eternal slumber afterward, but explode into electromagnetic particles that are often blamed for sightings of paranormal phenomena such as ghosts and specters.
Should the soul be bound to an item then there is no animation of such object. A link between the soul of the contracted and contractor allows communication and souls imbued into items hold a level of awareness of their surroundings, though they lack specific detail to often be useful. This type of binding often serves only to give Nier company when nothing interesting is happening or to guard an item that he desires to keep a track of.
The third method of soul manipulation available to Nier is his most cruel, and least used, method. As it is a purely offensive ability that goes against almost all morality he has he would sooner suffer heavily before using it, though in times of need it has been witnessed as a last resort. Rather than implanting a soul into an item or container he fuses it into his own, but rather than simply sharing his mind and consciousness like with all other souls he rules he places complete subservience onto the soul he uses. Simply, souls do not like to share containers, so putting two in a shell that is originally only capable of holding one results in an overload of both container and soul together. By placing this contradicting energy in himself he effectively commits ephemeral cannibalism, his own soul devouring the power from the other in order to give himself a 'boost' that allows him to control three summoned entities without losing his sanity. Restrictions: Soul binding is both mentally taxing, physically taxing and time consuming. Deep in the throng of combat it rarely is an option, though with careful preparation it can end a battle before it ever gets going. However, there are several rules placed upon the power that keep even the god of the underworld from abusing its seemingly infinite capabilities. Nier is only capable of holding 5 contracts at any one time, and even then only capable of summoning 3 at any one time. Further restricting him are the methods by which they are summoned from the underworld and the taxation on him in doing so.
1 soul summoned, even without being bound to a container, places a massive burden on his body, often resulting in a migraine that lasts for days due to the complex effects of a shared consciousness, which also has a tendency to drive the turning cogs of insanity into overdrive. Overuse of a single soul also results in personality disorders and harsh remunerations accordingly. Nosebleeds, insomnia, catatonia and with extensive use, becoming comatose have all been recurring effects from a single soul.
2 souls summoned, a rarity in itself, breaks most boundaries of rationality within Nier. If having 1 consciousness gives him a headache, 2 is like splitting his brain open and jamming a tazer into the soft tissue within. He can maintain 2 souls for a maximum of fifteen minutes, after that unconsciousness takes over and he risks the souls he has summoned taking over his own, effectively trapping him inside a vegetative state mentally with the mind of whomever he has adopted into his mind controlling his physical form. The remunerations of 2 souls are harsh, often conflicting and extremely embarrassing or dangerous. Hemorrhaging is expectant, and no orifice is safe when it happens. His human form often gets abandoned at such times, allowing him a brief moment of respite before being racked with a pain not unlike being torn to pieces, imagine having a hook placed through every place capable of bearing your weight, then being suspended by it whilst rabid dogs tear at you from beneath and you might just scratch the top soil of the experience. The migraine that comes with 1 souls is not present, instead he MUST rest for the minimum of a week, during which time he is feeble in the most extreme sense of the word, otherwise he will end up suffering brain damage from the pressure amassed in his head.
If 2 souls sounds bad, 3 is basically suicide. Even a god struggles to control something with no physical existence, and nothing is as intangible as the human soul, once removed from its container it naturally has no rules, no restrictions and no reasoning. You place three existences within one container and you are asking for trouble. Becoming brain dead would be the least of his worries, and perhaps even a relief after containing the beings. Surprisingly it is not a matter of experiencing pain, as three consciousness' sharing one form can easily chatter over the brain telling you that you are being hurt. This also means that Nier has little control over himself when using 3 souls. However, there is a method that makes controlling all 3 souls easier on him. This method of soul manipulation, and the least used method, goes against ever moral fiber inside Nier, the dissipation of a soul.
Rather than summoning a soul and binding it to a container, subsequently sharing a consciousness with it and controlling it within his mind like a remote, Nier will fuse the soul to his own. Ephemeral cannibalism is the closest term to what happens inside his now fused soul. His own soul will devour what is left of its counterpart, using the excess energy to burn as fuel for controlling his 3 summoned souls. The reason Nier hates using this is that a soul which has dissipated will not attain the eternal peace he offers when forming a contract, instead becoming electromagnetic energy that is often responsible for myths about ghosts and specters. This residue serves as a reminder of weakness to Nier, forgoing all physical demands on his body and mind by torturing another soul for eternity is more of a burden on him than the remunerations he suffers from lesser summons. Nier can draw upon any soul he has a contract with, binding it to a container however requires a certain level of proximity. He must be in direct contact with the desired shell that he wishes to plant a soul into. Items are easiest, he simply needs to have both hands on the item in question and focus his energy on it. When a soul is bound to an item it does not take into account different materials, but the item as a whole is possessed, meaning that even if it were to be broken up into pieces it would retain the imbued soul, as long as the pieces were still relatively near each-other that is. Items that have been broken up retain their soul as long as the pieces are not scattered excessively, however if even one piece of a possessed item is removed outside the boundaries within which it can be bound the the whole soul collapses. Souls collapsing is different to dissipation in that the contract is considered fulfilled due to them being bound initially. With cadavers there are more complex issues with the range upon binding. Nier must not only have both hands upon the cadaver, but make a triangular shape out of his fingers and focus the energy into the center of this triangle. Like the possession of items and body will retain its soul even when dismantled, however it does not have the issue of pieces being in separate locations affecting its manifestation instead the souls contract is fulfilled when the head is destroyed, as the brain controls the souls consciousness and holds the method linking it to Nier. Time acts as a restraint on Niers powers in multiple ways, though not the worst issue to deal with when given the opportunity to prepare for an encounter it is debilitating when action is needed on the fly. There are four manners in which Nier is restrained by time when using his contracts;
The first time restraint is that it takes time to plant a soul inside a container, approximately 2 minutes, give or take 30 seconds depending on how desperate he is at the time. When this is rushed he often ends with a less than complete bounding process, resulting in either a lack of motor functions into a cadaver or an overly strong presence in his consciousness. When taken into account that he must maintain physical contact with the shell for the soul it makes mobility with his powers next to impossible.
The second issue with time is that after a contract has been fulfilled he must wait at least a week before designating another contract to carry with him. Even though as god of the underworld he has an endless array of choices this limits him when conflicts are possibly to be prolonged over several days or in wave attacks. Nier also has no control over which contract it is that he will carry, making it a game of chance as to whether he obtains a stronger soul or not. It is just as likely that he would be given nothing but the souls of infants. (Different strengths of soul are explained in servant types)
The third issue with time is the cool down that effects his usage of powers. He may only use a soul once a day, a 24 hour period being the time that the soul can remain bound to its container. Within this time it does not matter if he removes the soul from its shell it will still have counted as one whole use. Which leads to the fourth issue.
Souls have one of two limits on their usage outside of Niers control entirely. This is often displayed in the proof used to validate his contracts. A soul will either have a set number of uses, generally being able to be bound up to three times before a contract is deemed fulfilled, or it will have a 'sentence' placed on it in the case of those who died having committed grievous sins or under mitigating circumstances. An example would be a murderer, if Nier attains his soul as a contract he may use and the murderer has killed three 20 year olds, he will have a sentence of 60 years service to Nier, at which point he will be given another contract, then eventually allowed into the underworld for eternal rest. This system allows him to use a soul twice as long as it has not been dissipated in some manner, but also allows a lot of weaker souls into his repertoire. Just as if he had a murderer who had taken lives early, if he is burdened with an elderly lady who died of old age he will often receive a small amount of time, days or hours even, before the soul is released. This also applies reversely for victims, as they often do not carry a number of uses but the amount of time their life should have had originally. As each soul has unique benefits and repercussions to him it is imperative he discards souls that eat up too much time on a contract, as he has to gauge their effectiveness and capabilities. Control Issues:Souls are unstable, it is a fact that cannot be governed even by the god of the dead himself, if he were to lose control of a soul at any point it can have devastating effects on not only himself, but the world around him in many different ways. The most immediate of these effects is that all souls under his contract are connected to him, sharing an ephemeral power within the god that allows them to appear in the mortal realm once more. If he loses control of a soul that has not yet been bound to a container it can vie for control within his own body, though he often gains control once again it is not something guaranteed.
As well as risking his own body there is the possibility that a soul would sever itself from their link but not dissipate in doing so, becoming a phantom. Phantoms have the power to possess others, all be it in a highly ineffective manner, as they are trying to push their way into a container that already bares a soul of its own. Without the gods energy behind them they are often ineffective but can result in awkward paranormal phenomena instead, such as poltergeists and unidentified lights that alarm the public. As well as humans they can posses inanimate object, bringing a sense of 'life' to them, another thing that only really bares issue by alarming the public because their toaster tried to kill them. (It is rare that Nier would allow a malevolent soul the opportunity to escape)
Another issue with control lies in the level of decay or wear of a container. There is no reason that Nier needs a full cadaver to plant a soul into, if it is missing its head or heart it is another matter, but other than that anything goes as far as containers are concerned. This can often lead to malfunctioning corpses with implanted souls going rampant, if the brain is damaged in some unforeseen manner he can loose control over its bodily functions, and that always ends in a nasty fashion. As with an incomplete body it is also possible to lose control of an incomplete soul. If the binding process is interrupted, or the binding broken somehow, or even if he happens to have an overly energetic servant on his hands with a bit too much willpower for its own good, it can wreak havoc on the commands he sends it. This leads to misinterpretation on the servants side, or full blown ignorance to its master, letting the soul do whatever it likes until it can be unbound from its shell.
The largest issue with controlling souls is that they share their memories with Niers consciousness, often blurring his concept of reality to the extent that he might lose control over them temporarily. A dire example of this could completely break the gods mental state, ravaging his own memories and resulting in a dual personality. Categories of contract:Upon entering the realm of the underworld a soul is often proposed certain terms to eternal bliss depending on their circumstances in life. As Nier has no control over a soul that is still bound to a mortal existence these are deemed eternally binding things, unbreakable by either party, at least not without the balance of the underworld being thrown out the window and the need for a new god in Nier's place. So it is something he takes very seriously, unlike before when the worlds population was in the billions and all contracts were arbitrarily simple, now that each soul coming through is a commodity to be brokered with and possibly needed in the near future he has to be meticulous about the terms he gives.
Whilst Nier often makes slight changes to each contract he forms there are several standards he has imposed on himself in an attempt to be fair to all souls deserving so. Thus the first contract is the "small blind". The small blind is an intermediate contract given to any basic soul that needs to be signed with. It governs the basics, Nier controlling their soul for the period of time available to the entity, then granting them access to eternal peace. It is never refused, as entry to the underworld without it is impossible. The only modifications made to this contract are made generally to those who lead extensively upstanding existences in their mortal life, whereby Nier will allow them to sign the contract under the promise that he will instantly break it if they are not desperately needed at the time when they were called up to be used.
The second contract is the "Big blind". This is a contract forced up a party whereby they give up full rights to their soul for whatever period is available, with no promise of release before that time is up, as well as no promise as to the misuse of their soul by Nier in times where such is necessary. These contracts are much less frequent than "Small blind" contracts, but still appear frequent enough that it could be questioned as to what kind of rule Nier is enforcing over these poor souls.
From this point Nier tends to complicate his contracts, enforcing roles on the souls he attains depending on individual circumstances. The first of these is the accumulator contract, whereby a soul may earn eternal rest through willing service to him, as their desire to serve seemingly alters the chances of them appearing in his arsenal. They start as a "Keeper," a soul which retains its own personality, memories and even desires. As its usage wears down on the soul it loses its desires, and becomes a "Watcher". A soul that has degraded to this level is often nearing the end of its contract and is likely to be cut loose. If it however is not released they will further descend into "Ghouls". Ghouls are the lowest form of an accumulator contract, they lose their personality, already having lost their desires they run purely on memory and command until eventually even their memories fade to nothing and they are little more than a mechanism that drives a container to follow Niers will. This fate is often reserved for those who have been found deserving of some punishment before attaining peace once more.
After the accumulator contracts and standard contracts are the special contracts. Nier has only ever made three of these, one of which no longer exists. A soul gives up its right to eternal peace entirely, wishing only to serve Nier, but unlike accumulator souls who can earn the right to be release by service, these special souls will never lose their memories, nor their desires. Once they have found their way into Niers arsenal of souls to command they will effectively merge with him as a single entity, spurring him to madness on occasion. These contracts are referred to as "Puzzles". For it is almost a mystery as to why a soul would ever take this option over the others. (The two times these contracts were made are included in the history) Servant types:The types of servant are effectively broken up by either their age at their time of death, or by a specific quality within the soul that deserves a sub-category.
- Infant: Infant servants are just as you would imagine, children. Nier is by no means a cruel man and usually releases these souls instantly, but under circumstances where this is not possible they last either the amount of time they had spent on the planet (if died of natural causes) or by how long they should have lived (if by unnatural causes). They are the easiest souls to manage as they have amassed less memories than their aged counterparts.
- Elderly: The elderly soul works identically to the infant soul, depending on their circumstances in death either serving the time they lived, or the time they should have had remaining, Nier is also generally in the mood to release these souls as they are not overtly powerful. Elderly souls tend to cause no problems unless they cling to their memories too insistently.
- Lamented: Souls that died with high levels of grief generally work on a system of atonement before being released, having a number of uses rather than a timer on their service. They are also a lot harder to handle than some other souls because of their emotional torment, effecting Niers consciousness if not kept in check properly.
- Content: A content soul is usually the best to come by, they neither put up much of a struggle, nor have much in the way of mitigating circumstances that might bind them to Nier for long periods of time. They tend to act as accumulator contracts, and even then usually are released before their time is up.
- Perverted: A soul that has been perverted by 'evil' influences, such as overt lust, violence or any manner of giving into their primal instincts too much, are by far one of the hardest souls to handle. They carry with them a strong sense of desire that has to be constantly maintained otherwise it could go haywire whilst Nier is trying to bind them, resulting in phantoms or specters.
- Fractured: Fractured souls are often the cases of suicide, those that had given up on existence. Nier is generally in two minds of these souls, on one side he appreciates life to the extent that he finds them irritatingly stupid. Yet, he sympathizes with them to an extent because he can read their memories and know how they have felt when alive. These souls almost always come with a number of uses over a timed usage.
- Mutilated: These are not the souls of victims, but those of the assailant in most cases. Whilst usually a soul is forgiven after a small penance has been made for their crimes there are some cases where no such forgiveness can be allowed. These are not only murderers, but those whose soul is so rotten from their psychosis that they cannot possibly be given terms similar to that of other souls. They have the most dangerous levels of awareness, their desires and personalities being ghastly embodiments of human filth. Their memories also tend to plague Niers mind when using them.
- Feral: Feral souls are those belonging to animals that have passed through the underworld. Whilst it is perfectly plausible to place an animals soul into a container it is not something desired. The issue of sharing consciousness with animals can often lead to complex difficulties afterward (retaining the nature to chase shiny things and lick himself clean being only two of them.)
- Divine: Immortal souls, like those of a Deity, can only be contracted if Nier has claimed the soul personally. So far this has never been done, as proved by his inability to tame the goddess Gaia. The length of contract that would apply to a god is also an unknown.

[STYLE=width: 325px; background-color: #ffffff; padding: 5px; text-align: left; font-family: arial; font-size: 10px;] personalityNier, amidst the title of being god of the underworld, is one of the most caring people you are likely to meet. A child at heart, accepting of -almost- anyone with a youthful naivete that be-goes his nature as torturer and admin of souls both evil and honest. This results in him having a natural charm and trusting nature. Though of course nobody really gets away with abusing his kind hearted personality, being able to make them eternally suffer after death has its uses against bullies. And there is a lot to bully him about. The complexity of his shared consciousness when using his powers ends in a personality that appears spontaneous, and often juvenile, though he is in-fact simply a fun loving character. Who just so happens to have no patience or ability to handle monotony or boredom.
Even when enraged Nier is the type to conflict with himself, always holding back in some manner or another, except when it comes to self defense or the protection of children. Having dealt with the souls of children on a regular basis it still sickens him to face watching them in pain, and boy can he be a sadist when its applicable to the situation. This is emulated in his awkward sense of humor, he generally finds himself funnier than others do, as well as in his daily speech, jumping from a perfectly normal topic into some sadistic comment that usually keeps people on edge around him. Talking to Nier is something most people are not very good at, as if there were something permanently damaged about him, like a few cogs in his head aren't quite lined up properly.
As someone who is known as an eternal child by his peers in the ephemeral community it is not surprising to find him often causing many issues within the populace, generally doing things that are troublesome simply to kill time. He is however intangibly lazy, hiding as a mortal disciple of his own temple in order to avoid doing any serious labor. Nier is also a very effeminate man, having shared his consciousness with so many female souls over the ages he has lost his concept of gender to a certain extent, choosing to not define himself by simple terms such as male or female, instead adopting a lifestyle that tells him to follow whatever whim happens to take him at that particular moment.
Nier has several tendencies and habits that make him unique and quite distinctive, alluring perhaps to his place in a social hierarchy that tends to look down on the more feeble seeming members of a community and favoring those with strong survival skills. The first of these habits is his hair twirling, when in thought it would be rare to see Nier without a golden lock wrapped around his fingertips, it also acts well as a distraction to the unnerving stare that comes with his tendency to stare obsessively when talking to people. Aside from those two habits Nier also taps his feet and wraps his knuckles on surfaces as if playing a drum kit, even though he has no ability to keep time when doing so. He also often breaks out into random bursts of somewhat out of tune humming, all songs that he has made up on the spot rather than being well known.
Nier classifies himself as a spectator to mortality, unable to truly pick a side in an argument, or settle any form of issue really. As humans have the tendency to search for answers and struggle to survive in an ever changing world, Nier adopts a strictly narrative position in their fleeting existence. A romance here, a friendship there, all ending due to the whole "immortal ruler of the dead" thing...which cramps even the most flourishing relationship. Thus Nier is rare to interact with those likely to remember him, children and the elderly being his favorites. Having the memories of up to five other people in his head makes for being a fabulous story teller. And sometimes its nice to listen to someone talk about the past without having a visual play-by running in your mind at the same time.
He is a creature of addiction, flimsy though his vices may be. Life is his biggest attraction, there is something about a soul that is inside a living container that calls out to Nier, you could almost say he gets drunk off being around those who have the spark of existence within them. But this is by no means the only thing Nier takes pleasure in, simply lying in fields watching clouds go past, or dancing around in, generally, women's clothes to the imaginary music in his head, even talking to the souls under his control. It is all part of the curious nature that keeps him in the mortal world, otherwise he would have given up on something as boring as being a god a long time ago. appearancein this section please describe your character's physical appearance, all we need from you is at least 100 words if you are a deity describe both your deity and human appearance historythis is where you get to talk about your character's background story, include key events in there life and how they became them, this should be around 150 words [/style]
